Dedicated to our dogs, puppies are raised at home with 24 hour attention, socialization and care. A small private pet-professional we are happy to have happy clients across Canada some who have come from other provinces for our puppies. No crate training here. When old enough puppies explore their environment naturally as often as they want to, supervised at all times. When they are small or at other times as older, enjoy a training playpen that allows 8-15 ft of room for playing, sleeping and potty training that begins at 3 wks old. (Please keep in mind all puppies need re-training in the new home.) Gentle conditioning with soft music, tone of voice and rewards & affection. Mommy & Daddy dog are hands-on and by their side. If there are puppies available there will be pics here.

Please consider why not to crate train, we don't recommend it: https://www.peta.org/about-peta/why-peta/crating-dogs/

A happy alternative on occasion is a Puppy or Exercise Playpen that allows 8 - 15 feet of room, to play in, for nap time or potty training, are lightweight and foldable, can be taken anywhere. Never designed for long stays, the playpen nicely fits pee pads, toys and blankets and are a fraction of the cost of a crate (usually 45 - 60$): https://www.amazon.ca/New-World-Pet-Products-B552-30/dp/B079PK85DV/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=puppy+playpen&qid=1562477794&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-5

Registries - Because Havanese are originally international dogs with origins in Cuba and the breed was revived after almost being extinct there are varied registries for them. Currently they are mainly in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Cuba.

HAVANESE
Havanese are known for their personality, real little characters, very intelligent and with directed attention learn very quickly. Super sweet and cuddly. Bred for centuries as companions, this is an inborn trait, they thrive on attention and are eager to please. Excited to see you every single time you walk in the room (if you don't let them follow you around the house that is) and get anxious when you leave. Must have company to be happy and healthy. Not a yappy breed they will like to alert you however to strange noises or if trying to express themselves. They love soft music and being talked to, chatter happily away, they will love the sound of your voice. The average dog understands 200 - 400 words of the human language as adults. The more you talk to them the better. Feisty, playful, sensitive, affectionate and smart are the personality of the Havanese.
The quintessential Companion small breed and fur-baby. Expressive, smart and love to engage with you. They will even try to communicate with you. Want a treat? A Havanese might jump on your lap and sniff around your mouth to show you so. Time to relax in front of the tv? Your Havanese might just run and get the blanket for you or him or herself. Can also surprise you with tricks you've never taught them and surprise you with a pirouette or pretty-please poise. An agile breed they love to see things from above floor view and like their comfy chairs or may just leap up onto your table or desk to say hello. Not "working" or utility dogs, or typically farm dogs or adventure hiking dogs, they love the outdoors when they are with you. Light on exercise most are mainly indoor dogs who don't usually like the cold or damp weather. They more-so enjoy interaction, playing and doing tricks with you. Good for small or big houses or big or small yards, even apartments. Be you young or old are very adaptable to busy or quiet households, will be happy wherever their owner is.
They shouldn't be left alone for long periods of time - no puppy especially should be. Havanese need homes where someone is with them so a pet-sitter is a great idea if you're not stay-at-home parents, retirees or p/t or self-employed. They also love the company of a sibling pet or same size pet that is compatible. This is not a fussy or needy quality, many toy or small breeds are the same, they distress if left alone for long periods. That is what bred for companionship means, that trait is born right in them and natural for all Havanese. This is also how they become smart, from being with and interacting with you. It also means they are devoted to their owners, faithful, sensitive and intelligent. Meant to be at their owner's side as a delightful friend. If this is the dog for you then you will be thrilled with your new little Havanese who will love you unconditionally.
Once almost extinct and are still classified a rare breed. All Havanese originate from 11 little imported dogs that survived the Cuban revolution and the breed was revived by a Mrs. Goodale in the 1970's. The history of the breed goes back to ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt and later Europe. They almost went extinct during the cuban revolution when most were detroyed in the fighting. UKC was the first to register the newly revised breed for dog shows in the late 1990's. Other registries later included AKC, CKC, NAPR, Continental, etc. Only in Canada for approximately 25 years, currently there are approximately less than 40 breeders of Havanese in all of Canada, most in Ontario. Unfortunately, we do not deliver to provinces that do not have Havanese or to the USA. We breed for family or companionship pets, don't train for dog shows currently and are very happy with the North American Purebred Registry for family or companionship pets.
Their origins have a rich and interesting history once belonging only to elite circles. Today as a rare breed it is estimated there are approximately 11,000 reg'd Havanese worldwide (2017) and even if their number has increased over the past few years they still are classified as rare.

More About Havanese
HAVANESE Coats:
The classic looking Havanese has a curly outer coat with a cottony double coat or undercoat. The undercoat is insulating for warm weather and will keep the dog cooler. It doesn't work that way for the winter however and won't keep the dog warmer in the cold. The coat should not touch the ground but be a few inches short of it. Regular grooming is required. This is a long haired dog and is meant to have their hair long though many will cut it short as an adult. A Havanese's look is long, wavy and naturally tousled. It takes 2 years for their hair to grow long. It is recommended not to cut their hair until that age. A longhaired is meant to have long hair and requires refular grooming.
The Havanese Silk has a long wavy coat with little or no undercoat. The Silks are considered by some to be most closely linked to the originals of the breed, the Havana Silks or Havana Blanquito and are usually smaller as in Toy breed size. Currently, there are efforts to distinguish the Havana Silks as a separate breed with their own genetic composition. Their coat also is meant to be long and is easier to manage with grooming having no undercoat.
The Satins are the Short-haired or Smooth coats. Just as there are long and short haired German Shepherds, Chihuahuas and Daschunds, etc, there are also short-haired Havanese. Because they are lesser known by some people we have included more info about them here. Originally not included in Dog Shows but still registerable as a purebred, they are now accepted in Dog Shows for skill events like agility etc. but not Conformation yet. Short-haired exist in many lines of the breed. Dog Show breeders for years didn't breed them because they didn't go into Conformation events due to varying hair length. So there are simply less of them. This doesn't however deter the gene pool. A long haired Havanese can give birth to both long or short-haired pups and likewise a short-haired Havanese can have long-haired or short-haired pups. They are in every way healthy and standard dimensions.
The length of coat varies for short-haired with a smooth muzzle/face and wisps along the bottom of torso and back of legs, some have longer hair on the body. Smoothcoats have hair that is short all over. With a thick crest (chest), slightly wavy haunches, and the plumed tail. Some people simply prefer the look of a smooth-coat dog plus there is no grooming required. You cannot have a shorthaired Havanese without two purebred parents because they each must have the short haired gene to produce one. A short haired gene means it is a recessive gene only because it is not a long-haired one. Which is not a biological deficiency, it's the same as two brown eyed people having a blue-eyed child who doesn't possess a brown eyed gene which would mean recessive. Therefore they are sometimes referred to as going back to an earlier version of the breed. The term "flaw" is a Show Dog term which simply means not conforming to an established standard, this doesn't mean physical/medical flaw. With for example Chihuahuas, the short-haired were classified first for shows and it took many years before the long-haired were. Short haired are not hypoallergenic because they don't have the undercoat but are still light shedding.
When Goodales's was reviving the breed at she diversified the gene pool with Bichon with her later litters. The original litters had shorthaired. All Havanese today came from those original dogs even european ones because Havanese of original cuban descent were almost extinct until Goodale revived the breed. The Havanese are still fairly young as a breed being only classified for approximately 25 years as opposed to some breeds that have been around for many decades or hundreds of years.
Many people like a Havanese for the long hair then get it cut short when adult dogs so please consider a shorthaired, in every way the same other than the coat. They are a delightful Havanese.

A Havanese is a Havanese is a Havanese, the characteristics are the same and people choose them because of their affectionate and fun-loving character, lively gait and very smart, sensitive and devoted temperament. Compact and sensational they are truly an intelligent, remarkable dog. The way to tell a purebred Havanese is the black eye rims and eyes, almond shaped.

Hypo-allergenic are long-haired. Short-haired are not considered hypo-allergenic because they don't have the undercoat, but are light shedding and low dander. Non-smelling are both long and short haired.

The champagne color is unique. Depending on the lighting the pigment will reflect a tawny color like pink champagne, the indoor lighter pigment will be warm tan, peachy, or darker pigment champagne.

There is a lot of outdated information on the shorthaired online. Please use discretion when reading those sites. Shorthaired are found across most lines of Havanese, they are not unusual to have but a little more rare and sometimes harder to find. Havanese only having been registered approximately 25 years there is still a small gene pool. They are allowed in all dog show events other than conformation because a standard hair length has not been established yet for that category and it can take up to 20 years for that. Either way they are a delightful happy, healthy Havanese companion.
